Boston Welcomes 2026 with Fireworks Over the Common and Harbor
Boston closed out 2025 and rang in 2026 with two completely different but equally beautiful fireworks shows, one over Boston Common at 7pm and another over Boston Harbor at midnight. This year felt special for a lot of reasons, but one of the biggest was the weather. For once, New Year’s Eve in Boston was calm, clear, and comfortable, which is something anyone who has spent years photographing this city in the winter can truly appreciate.
The early evening show over Boston Common was a perfect way for families and people who did not want to be out late to still experience something memorable. The fireworks erupted above the trees and the historic Parkman Bandstand, filling the sky with color while the city skyline glowed in the background. Seeing the Prudential Center lit up with 26 for the new year behind the bursts added an extra layer of Boston pride to the scene. It was one of those rare moments where everything lined up, the lights, the clouds, the skyline, and the timing of the fireworks.
Photographing fireworks through the bare winter branches on the Common is always one of my favorite challenges. The trees frame the explosions in a way that gives the images depth and a sense of place that you can only get right there in the park. With the clean air and minimal wind this year, the smoke cleared quickly between bursts, letting the colors pop and the skyline stay sharp. It made a huge difference in the final images.
After a few years away from photographing New Year’s Eve fireworks, it felt great to be back behind the camera for this event. There is something about Boston on New Year’s Eve that is hard to describe unless you have experienced it. The city feels hopeful, reflective, and electric all at the same time. Being able to capture that energy again after a hiatus made this night even more meaningful for me.
Just before midnight, the focus shifted to Boston Harbor. From the waterfront and surrounding neighborhoods, the skyline provided a stunning backdrop as the fireworks launched into the sky. The reflections off the harbor, the glow of the buildings, and the steady rhythm of the bursts created a completely different mood from the Common show. Where the early fireworks felt intimate and cozy, the midnight display felt bold and celebratory, a true citywide moment as Boston officially welcomed 2026.
Clear skies and calm winds made this one of the best New Year’s Eve fireworks nights Boston has had in years. No heavy snow, no thick fog, no freezing rain. Just crisp winter air and a city lit up by color and light. From a photographer’s perspective, nights like this are rare and always appreciated.
These images are a reminder of why I love documenting Boston. Whether it is a quiet morning on the waterfront or a sky full of fireworks over the Common and Harbor, this city never stops giving me new moments to capture.
